Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Wednesday that the federal government is pledging an additional $1.5 billion to create 9,200 new homes as part of its Rapid Housing Initiative.

Trudeau made the announcement in Kanata, Ont. alongside Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

The PM was also asked about accountability stemming from the discovery of unmarked graves at former Indigenous residential schools. "I think that there’s no question this terrible and shameful part of our history was not done by any one person. It was a combination of institutions of organizations of governments…of individuals within those institutions and governments. Government’s have their role to play, the justice department no doubt will have its role to play as well and accountability needs to be moved forward."

Trudeau added that Canada Day will be an opportunity to have conversations with family and friends about how we each can stand as allies to Indigenous people.

Replying to his son asking about Canada Day being cancelled Trudeau said he told him "it's going to be a day that yes, we will celebrate the great things about this country, but we will mostly reflect on the work that we all have to do as individuals and as institutions to be better to be more like the country we like to imagine we are."
