Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday the fast-track construction of more than 40,000 housing units over the next ten years in Vancouver, B.C. as part of the government's Housing Accelerator Fund.

"This deal will mean less red tape, more housing built near transit, more affordable rental housing and more density homes in accessible, vibrant communities," he added.

"It's going to include a digital permitting process. It's going to include continued investment in social housing for some of the community's most vulnerable people," he said.

This announcement comes days after the feds announced consultations will begin on the revival of a WWII-era housing plan to speed up the pace of home building across the country.

The program nearly 80 years ago run by what was at the time known as Wartime Housing Ltd., provided standardized housing blueprints to builders. The minister added the variety of homes offered would be built in a cost- and labour-effective way.
