On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the federal government will be providing the province with $3.1 billion to make improvements to its health-care system.
The deal comes as provinces like Ontario are looking to allow more private clinics to ease wait times for surgeries and medical imaging. The federal government, however, is adamant that health-care delivery must stay publicly funded.
"Our universal health-care system didn't happen by accident, and it won't continue without effort. And let's be honest, right now we're facing significant challenges to health care right across the country," Trudeau said.
Trudeau and Ford met with Ontario nursing students prior to the announcement.
They were joined by Health Minister Mark Holland, Mental Health and Addictions Minister Ya’ara Saks, Ontario’s Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones and Ontario’s Mental Health and Addictions Associate Minister Michael Tibollo.
