Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday that the national handgun freeze announced earlier this year had now come into force, saying from Oct. 21 forward it would be illegal to purchase, sell, import or transfer a handgun in Canada.

It was first announced earlier this year as part of a broader firearms-control package that would allow for the automatic removal of gun licences from people who have committed domestic violence or engaged in criminal harassment and included increasing the maximum penalties for gun smuggling and trafficking to 14 years from 10.

Trudeau also addressed recently released recordings of RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki in relation to the Nova Scotia mass shooting, saying it was the RCMP and authorities who decided when information about an investigation, such as the Nova Scotia mass shooting and the weapons used in the tragedy, were released and they will ask for more answers but will ensure police can "do their jobs."
