Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday a $300-million recovery fund for those impacted by hurricane Fiona in Atlantic Canada. He said it would support projects that are rebuilding critical infrastructure, help with the cleaning of fishing gear so boats can get back on the water, and assist local businesses and communities with recovery.
It is Trudeau's latest visit to the region following the devastating impacts of hurricane Fiona, which caused damage in many parts of Atlantic Canada, sweeping away homes in places like Port-aux-Basques, N.L., and leaving thousands without power. Eleven days after the storm, people in Prince Edward Island have been left wondering when their power will return even as temperatures dip below freezing.
Trudeau also vowed Tuesday that his government would continue to work with the international community to hold Iran accountable for the shoot-down of Ukrainian Airlines flight PS752 in 2020, as well as the ongoing "repression of its own people" and the recent death of Mahsa Amini that sparked worldwide protests.
He said they would further punish the "brutal and bloodthirsty regime," a day after Canada issued new sanctions over Amini's death while in the custody of Iran's so-called morality police last month for reportedly wearing her hijab too loosely.
