Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau kicked off day one of his campaign ahead of the Sept. 20 federal election in Longueuil, Que., focusing on economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also announced if re-elected, his government would extend the Canada Recovery Hiring Program.

Trudeau confirmed on Sunday spoke with the newly-minted Gov. Gen. Mary Simon and asked her to dissolve the minority government he has led since October 2019.

Trudeau first became prime minister in 2015 when he won a majority government. But he was reduced to a minority government in the 2019 federal election, meaning he has needed the support of at least one other party — frequently the NDP — to survive votes of confidence and pass bills during the COVID-19 pandemic.
