In Ottawa, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Official Languages Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor announced details on Wednesday about the Official Languages Action Plan for the 2023-2028 period, with the government announcing its key priorities for the next five years.

"This new action plan will help ensure the continued growth and prosperity of both English and French across our country," the prime minister said.

Petitpas Taylor said the main pillars of the plan are: increasing Francophone immigration, creating new learning opportunities, supporting the vitality of our official language minority communities, and furthering the federal government's position as a key partner for communities.

They said the plan aims to protect the French language outside of Quebec, and English in predominately French Quebec communities.

Trudeau added the plan recognizes the social, economic, and cultural value of official languages.
