Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with B.C.'s new premier David Eby for the first time on Friday, where they held a joint press conference on the federal government’s child-care affordability plan and its impact on the province's residents.

“As of yesterday, B.C. has met its joint goal with the federal government to reduce average childcare fees by half. This is good news for families who are now saving up to an additional $6,600 per year per child — because of our government’s investments,” Trudeau said to applause.

In November last year, B.C. was the first province to sign an agreement for Canada's federal child-care plan. The agreement is aiming to help provinces reduce child-care fees by an average of 50 per cent by the end of 2022, and to reach the goal of $10 a day by 2026.

Answering questions from reporters after the press conference, Trudeau also touched on topics ranging from rising inflation, the federal response to the Iranian government and forest protection policies in light of the upcoming COP15 Biodiversity Summit in Montreal.
