Canada’s federal government is pushing back against criticism that its new affordability plan will contribute to rising inflation.
“We’ve been very prudent as a government to make sure we’re targeting the supports to people that need it the most,” Tourism Minister and Associate Minister of Finance Randy Boissonnault said.
“And as leading economists have pointed out, these supports are going to go to those people for whom, looking and having to deal with the rising costs of inflation, they don’t have savings to go into and that’s how we know its not an inflationary move.”
Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre had said he would fight to oppose any tax increase on seniors and workers after the government announced its plan, and he said he was putting the feds “on notice.”
As part of the government’s affordability plan, the government released details about a rental top-up for families with incomes less than $35,000 and individuals who make less than $20,000 a year.
Ministers also provided details of a temporary dental benefit for parents of children under age 12. Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said the benefit would be in place while the government works on developing a “comprehensive” national dental plan.
