At a news briefing in Ottawa on Thursday, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault announced up to $250 million over four years for measures to make home heating more affordable for families across the country through the Low Carbon Economy Fund (LCEF). Approximately $120 million — or half of the overall funding — will be earmarked for people in Atlantic Canadian provinces, where using oil for home heating is much more common.

With a focus on lower-income households, this funding will help homeowners who currently use home heating oil move to more affordable and greener home heating sources, like electric heat pumps. At current energy rates, switching from heating oil to a heat pump has the potential to save homeowners thousands of dollars per year in heating bills.

“This region has one of the highest proportions of homes heated with oil furnaces in the country. And many of those are older homes, with modest income,” Guilbeault said. “These are households that would love to get off the rollercoaster of global oil and gas price fluctuations.”

Recent soaring energy prices reflect a global energy crunch, as economies recovering from the impact of COVID-19 and supply disruptions of the Russia-Ukraine war run up against an increase in demands. Members of Parliament Kody Blois (Kings-Hants) and Joanne Thompson (St. John’s East) were also in attendance at the news briefing.
