Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that Canada and the U.S. would implement the Safe Third Country Agreement across the entire shared border beginning after midnight Saturday.

According to Trudeau starting then, police and border officers would return irregular border crossers to the nearest port of entry with the U.S. Trudeau also said the amount of time it took to announce the agreement was because of the complex processes to manage the border.

According to a Canadian government source cited by The Canadian Press, officials were negotiating a deal that could designate all 8,900 kilometres of the shared border as an official crossing under the Safe Third Country Agreement, closing a loophole that has allowed migrants to pass through Roxham Road.

In addition, Canada will open 15,000 slots for migrants from the Western Hemisphere to apply to enter the country legally as part of the agreement, a U.S. official said. A Canadian government official said these would be resettled refugees.

Trudeau also responded to a question about recent reports about former Liberal MP Han Dong, urging people to listen to the speech Dong gave in the House of Commons when he resigned from the Liberal caucus. He went on to say foreign interference is a "very real challenge" and Canada has given itself new "rigorous tools" to counter foreign interference. He said the government would continue to do everything necessary to keep Canadians safe.

During the joint press conference, Biden spoke about recent airstrikes conducted by military forces in Syria on two sites affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The strikes were in retaliation after an American contractor was killed in Syria by a suspected Iranian-made drone. Biden said he approved the strike and sent his condolences to the loved ones of the person killed. He added the U.S. does not seek conflict with Iran, but that the country should "be prepared for us to act forcefully to protect our people."
