Trudeau, Higgs announce $10-a-day child care across New Brunswick within next 5 years | FULL

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs announced a new child care agreement Monday that would see costs for parents "cut in half" and $10-a-day child care available across the province within the next five years.

Higgs said families would see the 50 per cent reduction in child-care fees by the end of 2022, meaning families could see around $3,000 in savings. It also comes with the goal of reaching an average of $10 per day by 2025-26. The federal government is providing $491 million, while the province is contributing $53 million.

In addition to child care, however, Trudeau also faced questions over the upcoming apology by Defence Minister Anita Anand and military officials to survivors of sexual misconduct and sexual assault within the Canadian Armed Forces. He said said survivors need to be the centre of "everything we do" in what the government does going forward when it comes to tackling the issue. He also said that the government "profoundly regrets" what happened to survivors and "we apologize," when asked about his own feelings on personally apologizing to survivors.

He also faced questions about Quebec's Bill 21 after a teacher was reassigned because she wore a hijab. Last week, Premier François Legault said the school board should have never hired the teacher given the law in place. While Trudeau did not say if the recent reassignment of the teacher would result in the federal government intervening in the bill, he said his thoughts went to parents who had to have conversations with their children about why their teacher "lost her job because of her religion."
