Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Cowessess First Nation Chief Cadmus Delorme signed a historic child welfare agreement on Tuesday that will see the community retake jurisdiction of its child welfare.

In March 2020, Cowessess First Nation members decided they wanted to assert their rights for their children and families in need of help under Canada’s landmark bill C-92, which empowers Indigenous communities to reclaim jurisdiction.

Previously, the community (east of Regina) and every other First Nation in Canada was stripped of its decision-making power over children in care in 1951.

Child welfare legislation was passed by Cowessess in March 2020. On April 1, the Miyo Pimatisowin Act came into effect, giving the First Nation full coast-to-coast jurisdiction over its children in care anywhere in the country.

Delorme previously estimated there were roughly 165 Cowessess children in government care.

The announcement comes one month after the First Nation announced the finding of an estimated 751 unmarked graves found at the site of the former Marieval residential school.
