Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Kamloops, B.C. Monday where the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Nation announced it had found what are believed to be some 200 unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school last spring.

Trudeau apologized for ignoring the First Nations' invitation to participate in a ceremony on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

He called his decision to go vacationing in Tofino, B.C. on that day a "mistake" and said he regretted it.

Elders, Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir and guests participated in a ceremony honouring residential school survivors and the children who never made it home and invited the prime minister to speak.

When he did, he said Canada was “ready to partner” on reconciliation.

Since May, numerous Indigenous nations have reported finding unmarked graves at former residential schools with the same ground-penetrating radar technology used in Kamloops, prompting calls for justice that have resonated across the world.
