Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to apologize in the House of Commons on Thursday for the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War.
More than 80 years ago, when Italy declared war on the U.K., Canada enacted the War Measures Act and rounded up more than 600 Italian Canadians, sending them to detention camps.
“To the tens of thousands of innocent Italian-Canadians who were labelled enemy aliens, to the children and grandchildren who have carried a past generation’s shame and hurt and to their community — a community that has given so much to our country — we are sorry,” Trudeau said.
Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole also offered an apology, and shared stories of multiple Italian Canadian families who were affected by the internments.
In 1990, then-prime minister Brian Mulroney apologized for the war internment to the National Congress of Italian Canadians in Toronto. But because it was not made inside the halls of Parliament, some felt it wasn't official.
