At a ground-breaking ceremony with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw in Vancouver, B.C. on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed issues of housing affordability, economic planning and the stabbing rampage in Saskatchewan.
The Sen̓áḵw development, the largest Indigenous-led housing retail development in Canadian history, will be built on 10.5 acres of land reclaimed by the Squamish Nation, in what is now broadly known as Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood. When completed, the complex will include some 11 towers, 6,000 rental units and 1,200 homes, generating an estimated long-term return of more than $10 billion to the nation.
“Our focus this week, as we kick off what will be a busy and important fall of parliamentary work, is on the economy, is hearing from Canadians working with Canadians to solve the very real pressures they're facing,” Trudeau said. “This government is there to deliver for Canadians to make sure we have an economy that works for all Canadians.”
Federal Housing Minister Ahmed Hussein, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Marc Miller and Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson were also in attendance.
