Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the housing crisis in Canada on Monday while speaking to media in Hamilton, Ont. saying that cities and provinces need to “step up” to find solutions.

Trudeau said housing is not a “primary” responsibility of the federal government but that it is something that Ottawa “can and must help with.”

Speaking directly on the situation in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), he said: “It’s not just the federal government that can solve this… the more we can do to draw the province to the table as well. I’d love to be sharing the stage right now, not just with the mayor of Hamilton but with the province. They need to be stepping up as well – particularly on affordable housing.”

Trudeau also reiterated his government’s commitment to developing a national housing strategy.

The prime minister also reacted to news of a new tentative agreement reached between the two sides of a labour dispute impacting some 7,400 British Columbia port workers.

He said his government is “hopeful that negotiation at the bargaining table continues to be at the centre of what everyone needs to continue to do.”

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) have said in a joint statement that they will recommend their members ratify the agreement.
