Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday that Canada was on track to build more than 10,000 affordable housing units through the Rapid Housing Initiative, which he said exceed initial targets.

"These new homes will support those who need it most – it's a significant step towards the goal of eliminating chronic homelessness," Trudeau stated.

The prime minister made the announcement alongside Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen.

Trudeau also announced Friday that the Canadian government is authorizing a loan of up to $120 million (CDN) to the Ukrainian government amid the ongoing crisis with neighbouring Russia. Trudeau made the announcement just hours after the United States met with Russia in an attempt to lower the temperature over the Ukrainian standoff.

With an estimated 100,000 Russian troops massed near Ukraine, many nations fear Moscow is preparing an invasion although Russia denies that. The U.S, Canada and its allies are working to present a united front to prevent that or coordinate a tough response if they cannot.
