On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the City of Saint John has signed an agreement with the Canadian government's Housing Accelerator Fund initiative.

The city will receive $9.18 million in funding through the Housing Accelerator Fund, resulting in the construction of 285 new housing units in the city over the next three years.

The agreement consists of eight local initiatives that aim to encourage gentle density, support affordable housing, and reform zoning and governance.

The Housing Accelerator Fund is valued at $4 billion and will operate until 2026-27, with the goal of fast-tracking at least 100,000 new homes over the first three years.

Since the initiative was launched, the government has signed 22 agreements, which are expected to fast-track the construction of over 450,000 housing units over the next decade.
