Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that March 11, 2021, would be named a National Day of Observance to “honour everyone we lost to this terrible virus, and to recognize the impact this global pandemic has had on all our lives.” More than 2.5 million people have died globally due to COVID-19, including 22,000 in Canada.
Trudeau also stated that almost one million COVID-19 vaccine doses were received last week, and another million are expected this week. He added that before the end of the month, a total of eight million vaccine doses will have been delivered to Canada.
Chief public officer of health Dr. Theresa Tam commented on the CDC’s guidelines for fully-vaccinated Americans, saying that Canada “will also be looking at some of these kinds of adjustments when it is safe to do so.” Fully-vaccinated Americans can gather with other vaccinated people indoors without wearing a mask or social distancing, according to guidance from American federal health officials.
Trudeau also responded to multiple questions regarding the Canadian military. He said he was “very pleased to see” the Canadian military is getting its first female vice chief of defence staff, after Lt.-Gen. Frances J. Allen was recently promoted to the role. He also said he condemns in “the strongest terms” intimidation or threats being directed at anyone stepping forward with allegations of harassment or assault – whether it be within the military or elsewhere.
