Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that Pfizer would be delivering an additional five million COVID-19 vaccine doses, originally planned for later in the summer, in June. That means there would be 9.6 million doses available for use in that month alone, according to government figures.
Procurement Minister Anita Anand said 1.5 million AstraZeneca vaccines from the U.S. would also be delivered this week and that the country was expecting to have at least 44 million vaccine doses by the end of June.
Trudeau and Anand made the announcement during a COVID-19 update alongside chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam, deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo and Health Minister Patty Hajdu.
Trudeau also addressed the pause on AstraZeneca vaccines for those under 55, saying that the work being done on vaccines, including the pause, was due to different levels of health experts coming together to ensure there is coordination in messaging. However, Trudeau said he recognizes changes to vaccine delivery can be “challenging” for Canadians.
Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam outlined how the investigation into the concerns regarding AstraZeneca has proceeded, and in turn how the decision to pause use of the vaccine was made.
Anand also said that they are expecting that deliveries of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine will start by the end of April, but could not provide numbers in terms of how much are expected.
