Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer at Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), provided an update on the ongoing vaccine rollout process on Thursday alongside Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, vice-president of operations and logistics at PHAC.
Fortin said the vaccine task force distributed the largest number of vaccines last week to provinces with 643,000 doses sent, adding that this number is expected to increase rapidly in March.
Starting next week, Canada is set to receive 444,000 doses of vaccines weekly throughout March and the total number of vaccines to be distributed by the end of this quarter is expected to be four million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine.
As of Thursday, more than 1.5 million vaccine doses have been administered in Canada. An equivalent of 2.9 per cent of Canadians have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 1.1 per cent have received two doses, Njoo reported.
He asked people to remain vigilant even restrictions are being loosened in parts of the country and the vaccine rollout is well underway.
