Coronavirus: Canada secures 2nd agreement with Moderna for early vaccine doses, says Trudeau | FULL

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that Canada has secured 168,000 Moderna coronavirus vaccines that, pending regulatory approval, should arrive before the end of December.

He said delivery of the Moderna vaccines could begin 48 hours after Health Canada’s approval.

The doses will be directed to remote and Indigenous communities in Northern Canada, he said, which could be transported within the coming weeks.

While Pfizer’s vaccine needs to be stored at an ultracold temperature until it is injected, Moderna’s vaccine can survive in regular freezers, which Trudeau says makes it easier to ship to remote communities.

“As soon as we get the green light, we will be ready to go,” he said.

Trudeau also said the federal government is providing up to $6.7 million in funding for COVID-19 treatments at Arch BioPartners, a Canadian company. He said this is to "support the development of their leading drug candidate to treat severe cases of COVID-19."

Plus, Canada's Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand provided an update on the status of Health Canada approval on Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine candidate, stating there's "continued negotiation" about the vaccines' delivery and terms, and the government is paying "fair market value" for the vaccines. Anand also said she has "no role to play" in the vaccine approval process.
