Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that the federal government would continue to help provinces and territories as they combat COVID-19, including dispatching the Red Cross to help in long-term care facilities in Manitoba, but stressed to premiers that federal "resources are not infinite." He said there is a threshold, should the cases spike too much, they may have to make decisions about where to deploy the resources.
Trudeau made the comments during a COVID-19 briefing alongside chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam, deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo, Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
During the briefing, Trudeau and Qualtrough announced new funding to help those impacted by the coronavirus. They said the government is investing $1.5 billion through the Workforce Development Agreements to provide additional funding to all 13 provinces and territories to help provide training, employment counselling and other services for Canadians working in sectors impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The prime minister urged Canadians to take steps now to help curb the spread of COVID-19, stressing that what “we do in the coming days and weeks will determine what we get to do at Christmas.”
Tam also said that if action is not taken now, the country could see an estimated 10,000 new cases daily by early December.
Canada has a total of 282,577 cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, including 10,748 deaths.
