Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited on Tuesday the Ottawa Hospital where the city's COVID-19 vaccination rollout was underway with the first doses of Pfizer's vaccine being administered to long-term care workers.

Jo-Anne Miner, a personal support worker at St. Patrick’s Home, was the first to receive the vaccination locally shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Trudeau, accompanied by Health Minister Patty Hajdu, thanked health-care workers for their efforts in combating the pandemic and administering the vaccine.

“It’ll still be a long winter, but as we start to see the proportion of the population increase that has vaccines, we’re going to be able to start thinking about what measures we can loosen a bit,” he said.

The Ottawa Hospital confirmed Monday it has received 3,000 doses of the vaccine as part of Ontario’s first phase of inoculation against the coronavirus.
