One day after his finance minister released the fall economic update, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Canadians his government will not cut support too quickly as COVID-19 vaccines are expected to begin rolling out.
Trudeau said his government will introduce a "historic" stimulus plan of 3 to 4 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) to rebuild the economy.
Followed by Trudeau, federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu announced that Johnson & Johnson has applied for Health Canada approval for its vaccine candidate, to become the fourth vaccine candidate pending the regulatory body approval, in addition to Moderna, Pfizer and AstraZeneca.
Public Services and Procurement Minister Anita Anand said the delivery of a COVID-19 vaccine is expected within the first quarter of 2021 once Health Canada gives its approval, and that she is negotiating with vaccine suppliers for earlier delivery dates.
Dr. Thesea Tam, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, reported 6,103 new coronavirus cases nationally, for a total of 378,139 cases.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland gave a fall fiscal update on Monday that included a temporary top-up to the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), a boost to the wage subsidy and targeted aid for industries that have been especially hard-hit by the pandemic.
