Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday provided an update on the country's COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan into the new year, saying the country will be getting 125,000 Pfizer vaccine doses per week in January, with a total 500,000 doses for the month.

“With the guaranteed millions of doses coming in 2021, every Canadian who wants a vaccine will get one, no matter where they live,” Trudeau said.

Ministers and government officials held a news conference following Trudeau's address, with chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam stating that the national average COVID-19 case count is more than 6,650 cases reported daily over the last seven days, and that the number of people experiencing severe illness continues to increase.

More than 7,000 confirmed cases of the virus were announced just yesterday, marking a new daily milestone as infections continue to climb at a worrying rate.

Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine has already been doled out in a number of provinces. A second vaccine, from Moderna, is expected to be approved by Health Canada soon with 168,000 doses set to arrive in the country before the end of the year.
