Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a COVID-19 briefing on Friday, where he addressed the announcement from his government earlier that day that Canada’s supply of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine has been hit by a temporary delay.

"This does not impact our goal to have enough vaccines available by September for every Canadian who wants one," he said. The delay is due to the company scaling up its European manufacturing capacity, according to the government.

Trudeau announced Tuesday that Canada had reached an agreement with Pfizer to buy an additional 20 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine.

The prime minister was also asked Friday about the possibility of banning certain flights due to international COVID-19 outbreaks and new COVID-19 variants. Trudeau said the measures and mandatory quarantine for travellers that have been in place since March have been “extraordinarily effective,” but that they are “always open to strengthening them as necessary.”

Canada added 7,563 coronavirus cases Thursday and 154 deaths as the second detection of the South African variant of the virus was reported in the country. There are now 688,891 cases in total and 17,537 deaths in the country.
