Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday that anyone who shows up at a land border with the U.S. will be required to have taken a COVID-19 test 72 hours before seeking entry.
The new measures will come into effect on Feb. 15.

Should those Canadians or permanent residents not be able to provide that test result, they could face “severe penalties,” including fines of up to $3,000 per person. Trudeau said his government will also be implementing new measures to ensure “extensive follow up by Health Canada” to ensure they are getting tested and properly quarantining.

Following Trudeau's announcement, federal ministers including Canada's chief public officer of health Dr. Theresa Tam, announced that over the past week, the total number of virus variants has more than doubled with seven provinces reporting variant detections.

Canada reported 1,846 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 809,970.
