Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday said that the country is seeing record spikes in COVID-19 cases and is urging premiers and mayors to "act now" to control the virus with targeted shutdowns.

Trudeau made the plea and when asked about invoking the Emergencies Act he said that he "doesn't see it as necessary right now."

Trudeau also announced on Tuesday, alongside the federal minister of veterans affairs Lawrence MacAulay, that the federal government would be providing $20 million to create the New Veteran's Organization Emergency Support Fund.

Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc joined Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam and Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo during the news conference.

Tam said the country now has 268,736 COVID-19 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 10,564 deaths. She added that there are nearly 40,000 active cases.
