With COVID-19 cases accelerating fast in the U.S. and without a strategy from President Donald Trump, mayors and governors are imposing new restrictions. But, community spread is already so rampant in some cities that hospitals are overwhelmed.

President-elect Joe Biden also said on Monday “more people may die” if Trump continues to block efforts to plan for a U.S. transition of power as the pandemic worsens.

The coronavirus is blamed for 10.6 million confirmed infections and almost a quarter-million deaths in the U.S., with the closely watched University of Washington model projecting nearly 439,000 dead by March 1. Deaths have climbed to about 1,000 a day on average.
