Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that he is urging Canadians to reduce their contacts right away as COVID-19 cases have "massively" spiked across the country. Speaking from Rideau Cottage, Trudeau amplified his plea for Canadians to stay home and reduce their contacts adding "we need to do it right now."

Trudeau said Bill C-9, which became law on Thursday, will help businesses through this second wave with a rent subsidy that will go to tenants and not the landlords and that the wage subsidy has been extended through to June 2021. He said what's good for health, will help businesses.

When asked about Christmas, Trudeau said "what we're doing right now" will impact what happens, but "a normal Christmas is quite frankly right out of the question."

Trudeau said he isn't calling for a national lockdown and using the federal emergencies act to restrict travel is "not an idea I'm contemplating right now."

His comments come just hours after Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam warned that Canada is “not on a good trajectory” as she unveiled the latest figures in the virus’ spread Friday morning.

Tam warned that if Canadians don’t reduce their contacts, Canada could see 20,000 cases daily by the end of December. She urged for a return to Canadians only undertaking “essential activities” in order to avoid healthcare systems being crushed under the weight of the caseload surge.
