Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in his Canada Day message Wednesday, spoke about the recent discoveries of unmarked graves found at and near former residential schools in B.C. and Saskatchewan in the past month.

Trudeau said Canadians "must be honest with ourselves" about the country's history, saying the country has a "long way to go to make things right" with Indigenous peoples. He also said whether it's facing the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling the climate crisis or working towards reconciliation, "no challenge will be too great if we face it together."

Trudeau's message came just hours after another discovery of human remains in unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school in B.C. The Lower Kootenay Band confirmed Wednesday that ground-penetrating radar revealed 182 human remains at the site of the old St. Eugene's Mission Residential School in Cranbrook, B.C. Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde said the discovery is further confirmation of what residential school survivors have been saying for years.

In the past month, unmarked graves were found in Saskatchewan and elsewhere in B.C. with the remains of 215 children found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School and an estimated 751 unmarked graves found near the former Marieval Indian Residential School.
