Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged Canadians to continue to work together to fight COVID-19, saying they need everyone to continue abiding by measures so as to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and a potentially worse second wave, stressing they flattened the curve in the spring and can do it again this fall.
Trudeau made the comments during a press conference Tuesday alongside Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Mary Ng, chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam and deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo.
Tam also made a recommendation for Canadians to wear a three-layer non-medical mask going forward, a recommendation made by the World Health Organization in June. Asked why the recommendation was being made only now, Tam said with more people returning to indoor spaces in cold weather, the three layers will help stop more droplets from being expelled.
The prime minister also remarked on the death of Canadian Armed Forces member Cpl. James Choi, who died during a live-fire training mission in Alberta late last week. With Veterans Week beginning this Thursday, Trudeau called on Canadians to honour Choi and all veterans by wearing a poppy and by participating in Remembrance Day ceremonies online.
Trudeau also spoke about the recent attack in Vienna, Austria, while also bringing up recent attacks in France and Afghanistan, saying it was "unacceptable" for such attacks to take place and that Canadians condemn such acts.
