Trudeau warns young Canadians they can get sick "very quickly" as variants surge | FULL

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a warning to young people on Friday, as new COVID-19 variants continue to blanket the country, spreading quickly and sending younger Canadians into ICUs.

“There are more contagious and more serious variants out there. Even if you’re younger, you can get sick very, very quickly,” he said. “Or you can give the virus to someone you love, who can get very sick. I know you’ve already done so much and sacrificed so much, but we need you to hang in there just a little longer.”

The prime minister also said the federal government built in "responsive adjustments" to federal COVID-19 financial support so the system could react to the possibility of future waves of the virus.

Trudeau took questions along with Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Theresa Tam, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Howard Njoo, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic Leblanc, Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand and Health Minister Patty Hajdu.

His comments come as COVID-19 cases continue to spike upwards, with nearly 8,000 new cases reported on Friday – bringing the total active cases across the country to nearly 65,000.
