Trudeau says "everything" on the table to end border blockades, warns of potential violence | FULL

During a Friday news conference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for an end to the blockades at the Canada-U.S. border, specifically in Windsor, Ont., as protesters continue demonstrations against COVID-19 mandates.

The group, dubbed the "Freedom Convoy," has been planted in the streets of Ottawa demanding an end to COVID-19 vaccine mandates and other pandemic health restrictions.

Trudeau also said that he understands Canadians' frustrations about COVID-19 and public health restrictions, but "illegal" blockades are not the way to go.

"The illegal blockades seeking to take our neighbourhoods and our economy hostage, and the collective COVID fatigue we are facing, are two very separate things," the prime minister said.

Trudeau added that he spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden about the border blockades, specifically in Windsor, Ont. He discussed global and American influence on the protests, the U.S.-based flooding of 9-1-1 phone lines in Ottawa, the presence of Americans participating in blockades and the use of foreign money to fund this "illegal" activity.

Plus, the prime minister stressed that military intervention on civilians should be avoided “at all costs.” This is why, he said, the solution is focused on police forces, enforcing existing laws and protecting public order are the ways to deal with the ongoing trucker protests and border blockades.

This update comes after Trudeau held a meeting with leaders of opposition parties Thursday evening, where he said he briefed them on the latest developments of the trucker convoy protests and blockades.

The White House is calling on Canada to use federal powers to bring an end to the trucker blockades at key Canada-U.S. border points.
