Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reassured Canadians on Tuesday that all COVID-19 vaccines approved by Health Canada are “safe and effective” following what has been perceived mixed messaging from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI).
NACI has come under fire after contradicting the advice Canadians have been receiving for weeks to take the first vaccine against COVID-19 that they’re offered. It said Monday that Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are “preferred,” and that Canadians should weigh the risks of waiting for one before deciding whether to take a more immediate jab of either of the other two approved for use in Canada.
Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam added that Canadians “should feel confident” about getting vaccinated.
The prime minister also announced that a shipment of one million Moderna COVID-19 doses originally scheduled to arrive next week will instead arrive on Wednesday, while Procurement Minister Anita Anand said Canada was in talks with Moderna to make vaccine deliveries more reliable.
To date, more than 16.8 million COVID-19 doses have been distributed throughout the country’s provinces and territories.
