Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Special Representative for the Prairies Jim Carr outlined on Tuesday the support that the Canadian federal government was preparing to deploy to Manitoba amid a COVID-19 case surge in the province.

Trudeau said they were also looking at deploying medical staff through the Canadian Red Cross and sending support from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Carr said the armed forces will support COVID-19 vaccine rollout in 23 Indigenous communities in the province, and that the federal government is also prepared to send epidemiologists, lab technicians and increase testing capacity.

Weeks of high daily COVID-19 numbers have stretched Manitoba’s health-care system to the brink. On Monday, the province reported 353 new COVID-19 cases and four additional deaths connected to the virus.
