Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a statement Thursday in the House of Commons on the National Day of Observance for COVID-19 to honour the lives lost during the pandemic.

"On this National Day of Observance for COVID-19, we remember the people we’ve lost. Grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters, friends and colleagues. Each one was loved, each one was special," he said.

The prime minister evoked memories of Canadians being asked to stay home and stay safe, of essential workers stocking grocery store shelves and of people cheering health-care workers from their balconies.

"Every shift done by a frontline nurse, every mask made by a Canadian worker will not be forgotten," he stated.

Other Canadian political leaders, including Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh also spoke about the devastating effect the virus has had on Canadians.

More than 2.5 million people have died globally due to COVID-19, including 22,000 in Canada.
