A non-partisan group of Canadian members of parliament has come together to call on the Liberal government to support waiving intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines, following the lead of the U.S. government.

“We cannot put the interests of a handful of pharmaceutical companies over the public health interests of the global population,” said NDP MP Don Davies on Friday.

Davies was joined by Liberal MP Marcus Polowski, Green Party MP Elizabeth May and Bloc Quebecois MP Luc Thériault.

May added that it was “astonishing” that the U.S. government, that has been a champion of property rights, is ahead of Canada in calling for this waiver.

May compared the situation to the AIDS crisis in Africa, where patent rights prevented people from getting life-saving medicine until a number of groups were able to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to bring down the price of these drugs.
