Speaking to reporters on Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada takes both safety and security as well as freedom of expression “very seriously,” following an announcement on the Canadian government banning the use of the popular short-form video application TikTok on all government-issued mobile devices.

“This may be a first step, it may be the only step we need to take. But every step of the way we're going to be making sure we're keeping Canadians safe,” Trudeau said.

The ban will take effect on Tuesday, with TikTok being removed from all government-issued mobile devices. Treasury Board President Mona Fortier said in a statement that TikTok's data collection methods on mobile devices provide "considerable access" to the contents of the phone.

Trudeau and Fortier both said Canadians still have the "personal choice" when it comes to using the application.
