On Friday, Canadian ministers, followed by the country's top doctors, delivered an update on the country's COVID-19 situation and vaccine rollout, as Saskatchewan and Alberta face a surge in cases and strained health-care systems.
Health Minister Patty Hajdu said the government is providing offers of assistance to Saskatchewan and Alberta for resources including personal protective equipment (PPE), medical equipment, COVID-19 vaccines and testing amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
She also stated the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Canadian Red Cross will be assisting Alberta as the province's health-care system is under pressure from the fourth wave of COVID-19.
Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam discussed the COVID-19 resurgence in Saskatchewan, saying that while “we know how” to bend the curve, both increased vaccine rates and reapplying some public health measures are needed to help suppress transmission of the virus.
Officials also discussed vaccine approval for children under the age of 12. Health Canada’s chief medical advisor Supriya Sharma said clinical trial data for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine in children aged 5-11 is expected in Canada next week, while a submission to Health Canada should arrive by mid-October.
