Alberta's healthcare system continues to be under "extreme pressure" as the COVID-19 fourth wave continues to intensify in the province.
Speaking to media on Thursday, President and CEO of Alberta Health Service's Dr. Verna Yiu stated
that AHS had moved to it's highest level of surge response, which is designed to additional capacity.
"We've asked our teams to identify and open any spaces that can be used as an ICU bed," Yiu said.
Spaces such as operating rooms, post anesthesia care units, observation spaces and recovery wards are areas being considered according to Yiu.
"This means that patients needing critical care may receive it in the space that is not usually used as an ICU," Yiu stated.
Yiu also added that some patients may be transferred to a facility outside of their home communities, and more surgeries are being postponed.
Alberta's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, also took time during Thursday's update to clarify rules around the province's newly announced COVID-19 health measures.
Alberta identified 1,718 new COVID-19 cases, with 896 patients hospitalized, and 222 in ICU.
