Nova Scotia Premier Iain Rankin announced on Tuesday that a provincewide shutdown will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and will last for two weeks.
Rankin said there were 96 new COVID-19 cases in the province and variants were "on the move."
As part of the shutdown, all schools will be closed and indoor non-essential services will be restricted to curbside pickup, takeout or delivery only. Long-term care homes will be closed except to the primary caregiver. All essential services will be restricted to 25 per cent capacity.
There are to be no social events, festivals, in-person faith gatherings, wedding or funeral receptions, business meetings, sports or arts practices or performances.
Daycares will remain open “with the focus on providing service to those providing essential services or have no other child-care option.” Mandatory masking is also in place now for staff, visitors and children over the age of two in indoor settings.
Outdoor activities, such as golf courses and outdoor tennis courts can open, so long as people stay within their municipalities to use them. Outdoor fitness and recreation businesses, or organized clubs, can continue to operate with a maximum of five people and physical distancing.
Rankin made the announcement alongside chief medical officer for the province Dr. Robert Strang,
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced earlier in the day that the Canadian Armed Forces would be deploying 60 medical personnel to help Nova Scotia's testing centres.
