John Lohr, minister responsible for Nova Scotia’s Office of Emergency Management, said Saturday afternoon that he has reached out to federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair to request disaster financial assistance as storm Fiona pummels eastern Canada, which he said he’s been assured “will be coming very soon.”

Lohr said the province has also requested military assistance comparable to what was seen during Storm Dorian, which hit eastern Canada in 2019. Lohr said the military aid received then was “invaluable.”

Lohr made the comments during a briefing alongside a number of other provincial and municipal officials about the storm’s impact on Nova Scotia.

During the same briefing, Premier Tim Houston said restoring power to those impacted by the storm is the “biggest concern.” He said nearly three-quarters of Nova Scotia Power customers are without electricity in the wake of the storm.
