Canadian Minister of Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair and Minister of National Defence Anita Anand, alongside Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc and other ministers, provided an update on Sunday regarding the federal government's support for Atlantic provinces affected by post-tropical storm Fiona.

Blair said the government has approved federal assistance requests for both Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces will be deployed to help with roadway clearing and removal of debris, as well as aerial assistance to get a better understanding of the extent of the damage.

Blair also commented on the death of a 73-year-old woman from Port aux Basques, Nfld.,, after RCMP confirmed Sunday that her body had been found. The woman was reported missing Saturday morning after her home was damaged by Fiona.

During the press conference, he said the tragedy is a reminder of “how truly dangerous that storm has been.”

Fiona hammered Atlantic Canada Friday night into Saturday, causing widespread power outages, washing out roads and downing trees.
