Newfoundland and Labrador heads to the polls but critics question timing of election call

Newfoundland and Labrador are heading to the polls just under two years after the previous election and it has led critics to question the need for an early vote.

Premier Andrew Furey, who took office only a few months ago after becoming leader of the provincial Liberals, is citing legislation that forces him to seek a mandate from voters within a year of assuming the position, but opposition leaders say he's trying to win re-election before the upcoming release of a review into the province's finances.

The election is the fourth to be held during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the three provinces that held pandemic elections — New Brunswick, Saskatchewan and British Columbia — each giving the incumbents a majority mandate. Ross Lord takes a look into whether the same could happen this time.
