Nova Scotia's daily COVID-19 case count hit a total of 123, with 55 of them linked to the outbreak reported at St. Francis Xavier University, chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang said.
In total, the university outbreak has grown to 114 cases and Strang said some of the cases linked to the schools are being reported in a separate health zone due to the address on certain students' health cards.
Strang also advised that close contacts of those who tested positive from the outbreak are being advised to isolate and book a COVID-19 PCR test for at least 72 hours after their exposure. If they test negative they can then leave isolation -- but it is a difference from previous instruction for fully vaccinated Nova Scotians who normally do not have to isolate even if they've been exposed to COVID-19.
The province's top doctor, however, said despite expectations cases "in these kinds of numbers" will be seen in the days ahead, "we are seeing the protective effect of vaccines." He said all the cases they're currently seeing are "flu-like cases" that, while not comfortable, are not resulting in severe illness.
The province also announced that it is renewing the state of emergency to continue enforcing safety measures. The order will take effect at noon, Dec. 12, and extend to noon, Dec. 26, unless the government terminates or extends it.
