Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston responded Wednesday to suggestions that the province had been delayed in asking the Canadian federal government for help fighting the wildfires that are raging across the province.

Houston called the suggestion “ridiculous,” and said it was a “hurtful thing to post on social media for those that are evacuated, for those that are worried about the protection of their property, for those who are worried about their pets.” He said discussions about help are ongoing.

Houston said he had sent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a request for a “comprehensive” support package. The long list of requests includes military firefighters, ignition specialists, firefighting equipment and supplies – including 12 4x4 trucks and four helicopters.

Houston also called out those who defy the province-wide fire ban after eight illegal burns were reported overnight Tuesday.

“I do not know what they are thinking,” he said, adding that anyone caught disregarding the ban would face a $25,000 fine.
