Dave Meldrum, deputy chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, said Thursday that all hands were on deck as firefighters continued efforts to fully contain an out-of-control wildfire burning in the Halifax area, along with several “outside” fires.

“We’re stretched but we’re not broken,” he said, adding that firefighters “deserve time away from these incident scenes to decompress and get well.”

Meldrum said it had been a “very busy afternoon” Thursday, due to a large volume of calls regarding fire activity — in addition to the out-of-control fire in the Tantallon area that officials said had been partially contained earlier in the day.

Meldrum said firefighters have also had to deal with a large fire at the historic Waegwoltic Club in Halifax, which he said sustained significant damage. He said firefighters had salvaged some photos and historically important artifacts, too.
